LAKE OSWEGO, OR: FAMILY ART CLASSES ON SUNDAYS

Sadbh, age 6, Zagreb, Croatia, August 2010.

Artist Holidays art classes will be offering a special drop-in art class for children, ages 4 and up, and/or their parents, on Sundays, from 12:30-2 p.m., starting this week on Jan. 29 in Lake Oswego, Oregon.  Parents, you can drop the kids off, or join in!

We’ll practice a combination of realistic drawing and painting skills and mixed-media art projects with artist Leah Kohlenberg, who has traveled the world and taught family art in several countries.

Madisyn, 8, and Angela, 43, in Brooklyn, NY, June 2011.

What is family art, and why is it important? Adults and children make fantastic classmates. The adults show children that art is important, and demonstrate how to work independently and with discipline by modeling in the class. Perhaps more importantly, the children teach adults not to be afraid of art, the creative process, and not knowing how to do something! Together, it’s a potent combination, with much learning and enjoyment.

Register by e-mailing leah.kohlenberg@gmail.com, or calling at 347 251 1984.  Generously hosted by the Harmon Family in their Lake Oswego home, please e-mail for directions.

Fee: $15 per participant, including all supplies and a healthy snack. If ten or more participants sign up, price goes down to $10 per participant.

Mothers’ Day reminds us not only to be better mothers, or appreciate our mothers. We must also remember to mother our own intuition, or divine feminine, which is a key part of our creativity, whether we are male or female.

At Artist Holidays, we honor the mother in all of us by offering you a combination class sure to feed both the creative and physical appetite: learn to draw portraits and eat delicious crepes. As a mothers day gift to yourself and your child, please join us the day before Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 7, at the delicious Mago Creperie on 464 Grand Street (between Fulton and Lefferts Place) with one or more children for a portrait drawing workshop and crepe eating party!

(Don’t feel left out, dads, we’ll be doing a father-child portrait and crepe eating special class the Saturday before father’s day, too).

Each participant, both mother and child, will bring a printed photograph of their mother, or some other important female figure. World traveled artist and teacher Leah Kohlenberg will offer portrait drawing basics, and then help you create a finished product. You’ll also get a crepe plate and drink of your choice.

All experience levels are welcome, from beginners to professional artists. The emphasis here is not on expertise, but on spending time with your mother and honoring her. Both children and parents will draw!

This class offers you everything: a pre-Mother’s Day outing and quality time with your children. You’ll be supporting local business and learning something new, as well as honoring your mother and nurturing you and your child’s creative selves.

These art classes offer children, ages 5-14, a mixture of group activities, guided drawing lessons and individual projects both to boost their creative, intuitive skills and enhance realistic artistic skills. Participants can choose from a range of mediums – paint, pastels, pencil and ink, collage – to work in, and can move from project to project as they choose.

Schedules are flexible: children’s art classes are scheduled based on the child’s school schedule during the week, either privately or semi-privately (with a friend), or by joining another group.  To schedule a demonstration class, find out about available class times, or to register, e-mail leah.kohlenberg@gmail.com, or call Leah at 099 845 1834.

This nude was drawn by beginning figure drawing student Orli Landau during her first lesson!

No art experience is necessary for this continuing course designed to help connect us to our own creative, intuitive power within by drawing the female figure. We’ll learn several figure drawing techniques, including quick action drawings, blind contour drawing, tonal drawings and measuring, practicing with a real nude model. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Students pick their own projects and work at their own pace.

PASTELS TO PAINTING: This is an excellent class for all levels – beginners can learn both drawing fundamentals and colour theory which will help them make the leap to painting. More experienced artists can choose to go straight to oil or acrylic painting, or boost their skills through practicing the unique techniques specific to dry pastels.

PHOTOGRAPHY TO PAINTING: Perfect for tourists or residents who want to preserve their memories of Zagreb. We’ll first tour the town with our digital cameras, then use the photos to create a composition that you’ll either draw or paint, taking about 2-4  three-hour class sessions to create it. All levels welcome in this class. Scheduled upon demand, so please contact the teacher at leah.kohlenberg@gmail.com if you are interested.

CHILDREN’S ART ATELIER: Think your child is too young to learn realistic drawing and

Kids of all ages can work on the same project.

painting skills? These ongoing classes give children practical tips on how to draw what they see, and inspire them creatively. Enroll your child in our regular weekly drawing classes for ages 5-14, or our weekend arts and crafts class working with various medium for younger children (ages 3-6).

FIGURE DRAWING: Designed for both beginners and experienced artists, students will spend three hours practicing drawing with a live nude model. An extra model fee will be charged for each session, which varies depending on the number of people drawing.

Sadhbh-Iseult-painting

Our youngest participant, five-year-old Sadhbh, proudly displays the pastel drawing she did of her mommy, Iseult, also an art student.

We had a blast at the Mother-Daughter art class in Zagreb, Croatia on May 8 and 9, 2010.

Read all about it, and check out the photo slideshow, on my blog, artbroadabroad.wordpress.com.

Looking for an unusual gift this holiday season? Commission an original portrait of you, your family and/or friends!

My portraits are unique – first I photograph the portrait subjects to capture a natural, relaxed pose  (or I advise you on what to choose from existing photographs); then you can pick your medium – acrylic and pastel, or oil on canvas. I also give you a choice of making the painting over several canvasses, or a single canvas!

Commissioning a painting ranges from 200-600 euros per work, depending on the size, materials and number of people in the portrait. If you are ordering outside of Croatia, there will be an additional mailing fee.
